Urban Planning Students Design Prototypes for Salt Community Garden

Salt Living Lab

Girona, Spain – 4 June 2026

Students attending the third year of the urban planning course at the University of Girona are turning community-based design into real action through five concrete prototypes developed for the community gardens of Salt and its residents.

This exciting initiative, part of the REDESIGN project, was led by professors Nadia Fava and Felix Breton, with the support of Marta Carrasco. The project combines urban analysis, participatory methods, and the principles of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) to rethink how public and shared spaces can bring people closer in a local and sustainable manner.

Strong local partnerships

Throughout the process, students teamed up with local groups and organizations, including the Associations of Neighbors of Salt, the Milfulles Association, La Farga School, and the women’s sewing group of Salt, thus creating prototypes that answer to people’s needs.

Five prototypes for community life and sustainability

Each one of the prototype focuses on a different challenge, from everyday community life to more sustainable practices. Among them is a sculptural insect incubator designed to support gardening system equipped with rainwater collections mechanisms for educational use in schools, promoting both environmental awareness and sustainable resource management.

The student also designed a multifunctional market stall that can be transformed into a working tableA sign-holder system was conceived to improve communication among gardeners inside the shared spaces, while a compact communal tool house aims to facilitate the collective maintenance of gardening equipment.

Beyond their practical functions, the prototypes show that small changes in urban spaces can go a long way toward making neighborhoods more welcoming and more sustainable.

The prototypes will be officially presented during a public event on 4 June on Salt, where student, resident, and local partners will come together to share what they’ve built and discuss about how it brought to life.
