From Tradition to Community Building: Salt Canal Clean-Up and First Naturalist Centre Workshop

On March 28, a collective clean-up of the Sèquia Monar as it passes through the Hortes de Salt was carried out, reviving a tradition that helps build community, strengthen the self-management of the allotments, and reinforce the role of both the irrigation community and local growers in water management.
The day began at 9 a.m., with volunteers from the municipality, growers, and members of the irrigation community spreading out along the canal to remove waste and debris from the waterway. Afterwards, a shared breakfast provided an opportunity to recharge before moving on to the second part of the day: the first participatory session to envision the transformation of the former Naturalist Centre.
Revitalising this currently vacant and unused space, located in the heart of the allotments, represents an opportunity for both the municipality and the community. Drawing on the memories and experiences of those present, initial ideas were gathered, which will serve as a foundation for further work in upcoming participatory sessions.
Around sixty people took part throughout the day, and a total of 2,000 kg of waste was collected.

El passat 28 de març es va dur a terme la neteja col·lectiva de la Sèquia Monar al seu pas per les Hortes de Salt, per recuperar una tradició que permet crear comunitat, reforçar l’autogestió de les hortes i enfortir el paper de la comunitat de regants i dels hortolans en la gestió de l’aigua.
La jornada va començar a les 9 del matí, amb voluntaris del municipi, hortolans i membres de la comunitat de regants que es van distribuir al llarg de la sèquia per treure deixalles i altres restes de dins del canal. Després es va fer un esmorzar col·lectiu per recuperar forces i començar amb la segona part de la jornada: la primera sessió participativa per imaginar la transformació de l’antic Centre Naturalista. Es va explicar la oportunitat que suposa pel municipi i la comunitat poder recuperar aquest espai ubicat al cor de les hortes, ara buit i en desús. Partint del record i la memòria dels assistents, es van recollir les primeres idees que serviran per continuar treballant en les properes sessions participatives.
Al llarg de la jornada hi van participar una seixantena de persones i es van recollir uns 2.000 kg de deixalles.
